Welcome
to ID Theft Journal!
First, some introductions. We are Bluecase Software, producers
of ID-Theft Protector, and other quality consumer software.
We are keenly aware of all the news that's out there about
ID-theft now, so this is our area to provide advice, tips,
and generally sound off on what's been happening in ID-theft.
We
like to call ID-theft "the crime of the 21st Century".
Like train robbery of the old west, technology, commerce,
and opportunity have come together to create new territory
for criminals. Today, the intersection of the internet,
electronic commerce, and easy credit are making ID-theft
explode. It's easy to commit, tough to prosecute, and
the penalties are minor. The myriad of nameless, faceless
companies that hold our private information don't seem
to be able to protect that data very well, and when they
fail, they are reluctant to fess up. These factors have
added up to 10 million American victims in the last year.
But,
as much as things seem to be getting worse, they are getting
better at the same time. Increased awareness is generating
public outcry. Tough new laws in California have given
consumers new rights (that's the only reason we're finding
out about ChoicePoint, NexisLexis, and other data breaches
of late), and the demand for those same rights is being
demanded around the country.
We
hope to see more consumer activism driving change. Together
with good laws and good solutions, we hope to see ID-theft
begin to decline, but we know that is still a ways off.
Anyway,
let us know what you think, and tune back for more from
the ID-Theft Journal soon.
